When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there. Annex II of the Bern Convention lists 45 of Beljarica’s bird species, with a further 91 species in Annex III.

The male shown in the video above, filmed at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, was in the process of gathering nesting material for what usually adds up to a dozen to two dozen nests! It is obvious to me that the male Marsh Wrens at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge are getting ready for the females to visit their breeding territories.

This is brought about by a visit to Karori Wildlife Sanctuary/Zealandia, where I was able to catch up with the ducklings that I first saw back in the spring. They are the only endemic duck species that hunting is permitted for, in fact, the other species being either too rare or outright extinct.

Skye wore a long-suffering expression, while Bau-Hien – whose parents had settled in Texas after leaving Vietnam – regarded me with a mixture of fascination and alarm. The mission of wildlife rehabilitators is to return injured birds to the sky, or the sea, or wherever it is they came from. Soon the girls emerged.

Islands, for various reasons, experience more extinctions than continents (with Africa being the only continent not suffering a bird extinction!). This is particularly poignant if the bird has disappeared during the course of my birding days or “on my watch” as I like to think of it.
