Wagbachniederung & Saalbachniederung

10,000 Birds

Although an attractive bird, this species was not of particular interest to me as I’ve seen it countless times when I lived in South Africa (and is not present there at this time of year anyway), but the area has much more on offer. We were hoping for Bearded Reedling in the expansive reedbeds, but to no avail.

Know Your Audience: A Ring-necked Duck in Germany

10,000 Birds

I recently participated in an “English Report Writing” training, sponsored of course by my employer, and this post will function as a test to see how well I was focussed on the lecture (instead of the sky outside the seminar room which may hold a black stork any day during spring migration). Like … the Tufted Duck !

Come Bird Ghana with Malimbe Tours!

10,000 Birds

I chose the name Malimbe Tours because the first bird I ever set eyes on through a pair of binoculars was one of our dazzling malimbe species. I have trained young guides and have also discovered new and important birding sites that are now actively enjoyed by birders from all over the world. It was a fantastic experience.

Peeps and Plovers on Cuitzeo Beaches

10,000 Birds

In late July, I travelled a half hour north of Morelia to Lake Cuitzeo (kweet-SAY-oh) to see if our two inevitable first migratory species from up north, Baird’s Sandpiper and Wilson’s Phalarope, had begun arriving. At that point, neither species was yet present, and there wasn’t much of a lake, either.

Birding Singapore

10,000 Birds

For once, eBird gives a good description of the Asian Glossy Starling, calling it a “Fierce-looking, large songbird” As are humans, this species is fairly urbanized – it “sometimes enters urban areas to roost, e.g. in Singapore” (HBW). Lucky ducks. “Odd, me?”

Birding the Eshowe area, South Africa

10,000 Birds

The African Pygmy Goose to me looks a bit like an annoying teenager on a subway train who wants to highlight the fact that he wears enormous earphones. These two Hadada Ibis are reenacting the mirror scene from “Duck soup” (sort of). But the same species was never found again. In a distinct color.
