On our visit there were several hundred Pink-eared Ducks, Grey Teal, Pacific Black Ducks and Hardheads. Pink-eared Ducks through the poo Ponds fence. A group of Spinifex Pigeons ran along beside our vehicle on the inside of the fence and Red-backed Fairywrens hopped up out of the long grass.

It’s a small group of 10 to 12 researchers and crew members, and Fox is the sole person responsible for the bird surveys. Ahead on the water, I see roughly 200 tired snow geese settled together in a single, densely packed group. Fox encounters 69 species, some singly, some in huge feeding or migrating flocks.

Plenty of parks and forests have been protected even as the city grew. Right next to the world famous Opera House is the the Sydney Botanical Gardens, a good place to see Sulphur-crested Cockatoos , Banded Rails and large roosting groups of Grey-headed Flying-foxes. The city is a very green one.

Royal National Park is one of the jewels of Sydney, a massive park that protects a huge swathe of coastal bush (bush in the Australian sense meaning anything from rainforest to coastal scrub) to the south of the city.
