We soaked in the sight of two male Munias, a few feet from the dog run. This was the best possible place for the quail, and also the spot for what may be one of my favorite birds in the world, White-headed Woodpecker. Here and there, spits of pale sand became playgrounds for families and dogs, or hunting areas for Great Blue Herons. Then, in Meeteese, Wyoming, the Hogg family’s ranch dog Shep found something. The way Randy figures it, a desperate or curious ferret discovered a bowl of dog chow, and set to eating kibbles; then Shep discovered the ferret. It was the taxidermist who realized what the dog had stumbled upon and alerted the wider world.

The grackles might well be found here anyway as they like the wet habitat in Florida, but as an extra enticement, visitors feed the alligators with hot dogs and there is always a little something left over for a cheeky omnivore. Boat-tailed Grackles count eggs and chicks as part of their diet and they were well represented here today.
