These little Tyrant Flycatchers, present from Mexico through Colombia, never fail to charm, with their jaunty crests and characteristic “chewY-chewY!” Oh well, I’ll just have to come back again in another month. Tufted Flycatchers could be poster-birds for cuteness.

In general, they can be grouped into two main factions; birds of the highlands and species that prefer the lower, warmer altitudes although a few can also winter from the lowlands up into cloud forest. Tufted Coquette Arriving here during the hours of darkness presents its own cadre of obstacles, however. These large raptors are actually quite rare on Trinidad but seem to be breeding nearby as one of the sightings was of a juvenile. This is quite a remarkable fact if one thinks that this is the only (and first to do this) migratory bird to change its breeding and migratory habits. Just under a fortnight ago, I saw a report on the local bird alert of a sighting of a group of approximately 20 Nacunda Nighthawks at a wetland not more than 20 minutes from where I live. Striated Heron in breeding plumage – extra plumes and blue lores. We had no idea if the nighthawks would hunker down or flee. Great Blue Heron.

At first, the birds were absent, it was just that one shearwater, a sad lost Eastern Kingbird flying low over the waves, and groups of Brown Boobies making a beeline to feeding grounds. The Sooty Oystercatcher Haematopus fulginosus fulginosus is present in an area along the coast of Western Australia roughly south of Carnarvon and to the north the Sooty Oystercatcher is the sub species Haemotopus fulginosus ophthalmicus. The small group was a good counterpart to the large, convivial ABA Safari group of 98 birders.
