Meanwhile, the females seem to have a much more relaxing life, at least in this early stage of the breeding season. The associated bird species seek out drongos, apparently relying upon them heavily for protection.

I am within one of Florida’s sub-tropical zones, and my birding experiences have expanded, with life birds galore. Though it was crowded, I headed east down the beach, moving towards the dunes and land protected by Eglin Air Force Base. As part of my new job I work on Okaloosa Island, separated from the beach merely by the dunes.

I counted them very roughly, but I do have a lot of experience estimating flocks. They do not build nests, but occupy old nests of Rooks and breed colonially among them. Red-footed Falcon’s breeding range starts less than 50 mi north of here and I hope that some will choose to join a local rookery and stay.”.

I got to see a beautiful female and owlet on a trip to a secret nest location near Howard Prairie Lake (human-made nest structures have enhanced local breeding for these huge owls whose nest success is boosted to 83% on artificial platforms vs. 66% at natural sites).
