I have written about the interesting sex life of these jacanas a few times already (short version: female mates with male, lays a bunch of eggs for him to incubate and raise the chicks, leaves him, finds another male, repeat). The Little Grebe is of course a very common bird that can still surprise by its beauty in its breeding plumage.

The young sometimes do not get taken seriously by the adults – something that this juvenile Oriental Dollarbird probably experiences on a daily basis. Anyway, not a bad look for a juvenile given the bland look of some of the bulbuls I recently saw in Borneo, though of course, the adult bird looks more distinct.

Many of these (like Plumbeous Kites and Swallow Tanagers ) are here to breed, and they do so alongside a host of resident species. Field guides listed two subspecies – delicata (which would eventually become the highly migratory Wilson’s Snipe ) and paraguaiae (breeding resident South American Snipe ) – which were extremely difficult to discern from one another in the field. On Trinidad it took me some more time until I saw my first snipe.

I am within one of Florida’s sub-tropical zones, and my birding experiences have expanded, with life birds galore. The first shorebird I saw was a Willet , already transitioning out of its breeding plumage and feeding with the gulls along the surf. Almost every lunch break I head out onto the beach, looking for birds along the sand.

I was a bit surprised to see a juvenile Grey Treepie in Shanghai – it seems too young to already be on migration, and there was an adult nearby, so most likely the species is breeding in Shanghai, along with approximately 24 million humans. Soldiers could probably learn a lot about camouflage from this species.

Further support for inherent behavior comes from experiments. Egyptian Vultures raised is isolation used rocks to crack eggs presented to them. In another experiment, other species of Darwin Finches were kept next to Woodpecker Finches that used tools. The behavior was inherent. All they need is time to master the technique.

Once again Pied Oystercatcher breeding season is fast approaching in Broome and we can expect the first batch of eggs to be laid within the next few weeks. Where the beach has a reef alongside it on the northern section of the beach the pairs stay together throughout the non-breeding season. It is a spectacular and noisy sight.

Mallards , of course, bring new meaning to the term dabbling duck , what with all those wild mallard hybrids and domestic cross-breeds running around. In my experience, Cinnamon Teal x Common or Green-winged Teal hybrids are the rarest; I have seen pictures of only 2 such birds and a 3rd bird (the one mentioned above) in life.
