Having observed the Cattle Egret in breeding plumage at the Derby Poo Ponds on June 19th we found ourselves at Windjana Gorge first thing the following morning. A Wedge-tailed Eagle soared overhead alongside Black Kites and Whistling kites. There was a small group of Sulphur-crested Cockatoos being destructive as usual!

Unfortunately, the Ashy Drongos did not exactly do what he predicted that they would do – mob potential predators more frequently during the breeding season and mob the more dangerous predator (in this case, the Black Eagle) more intensely. If you do not want to be put in a cage, it presumably helps to be a bit aggressive.

There were two cars used by project participants, and I, the only birder in the group, drove the first car. But your reason to check the canyon is a White-throated Dipper that breeds there and with some luck, you may even encounter a Rock Bunting. One of the problems was poor communication.

In the non-breeding season, male Baya Weavers sometimes enter the basket-making trade, often with considerable success. Meanwhile, the females seem to have a much more relaxing life, at least in this early stage of the breeding season. It very effectively forms a small foraging group in this manner. When the land is flooded after rain it will move inland and breed at the ephemeral lakes and raise its young there. The Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus is a large black and white shorebird that has distinctive long pink legs. It has a fine straight bill and is found in a variety of places around Broome.
