Harpy Eagle! The biggest birding news for Costa Rica was a sighting of an adult Harpy Eagle in northern Costa Rica , near Boca Tapada. A group of kayakers were riding in a vehicle along the main road near the village of Boca Tapada when one of them noticed a massive bird in a roadside tree.

The boat had been chartered by a big group of Mumbai birders to see a Long-billed Dowitcher that would make a most unusual addition to an Indian list. It turns out that the dowitcher was showing so well that the group had had a whipround for the crew to encourage them to stay longer. Greater Spotted Eagle. All was forgiven.

24 species of diurnal raptors were recorded including Bicolored Hawk, both Cooper’s and Sharp-shinned Hawks (rare birds in Costa Rica), and Black and Ornate Hawk-Eagles. Raptors and Swifts. The swift action was also excellent, at least on our route. In the morning and even during mid-day, dozens of swifts coursed through the skies.

In contrast, Oriental Scops Owls seem to often migrate in slightly larger groups of maybe 10 or so. Getting a close look at Oriental Scops Owl, one can understand why the Chinese word for owl is maotouying, or “cat head eagle” For somebody like me who likes both birds and cats, owls are perfect birds.

In front of us, the river is two miles wide… and it is paved with birds: smaller groups of Greater White-fronted and Greylag Geese , numerous Mute Swans and Mallards , plus Eurasian Teals , Gadwalls , Common Pochards , a few Ferruginous and Tufted Ducks , Common Goldeneyes and several Smews.
