Joseph Chiera is a Masters student in Animal Behavior and Conservation at Hunter College in NYC and a “somewhat newbie” to birding. There were three other small groups staying there and after dinner we all drove 40 minutes to the cliffs. Sadly, I missed out on seeing White-tailed Eagles and Harlequin Ducks.

During our tenure there, we had exceptional views of Africa’s largest ( Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl ) and smallest ( African Scops Owl ) owls, the largest bird on the planet, not neglecting numerous hornbills, sunbirds and weavers. Along the track, the shimmering scarlet gorget of a Hunter’s Sunbird shone like a beacon.

You see, in German we have three distinct words for different groups of owls. The eagle-owls of the genus Bubo are all called “Uhu“. As a rule of thumb, with quite a number of exceptions, if the species sports feathery ears and is not an eagle-owls, it’s an “Eule“. So the blood hound is called the sweat hound here.

The land was of course already occupied by San (Bushmen) hunter-gatherers for millennia and more recently Bantu tribes of the Nguni branch (most notably Zulus and Xhosas). Sundevall named Wahlberg’s Eagle and Wahlberg’s Honeyguide in his memory. Woodward’s Barbet belongs to a group of barbets known as Green Barbets.

Thanks mostly to David Lindo, The Urban Birder, there are a few British bird groups touring the country every year now, even the BBC came to film the world famous Long-eared Owl gathering in the town of Kikinda with more than 700 birds in some winters. Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. Giving a few hundred hunters something else to shoot, in my opinion, cannot be worth the blowback from tens of thousands of people who are willing to travel and spend just to watch the birds fly over. Isn’t that neat?

It’s a small group of 10 to 12 researchers and crew members, and Fox is the sole person responsible for the bird surveys. The species was seemingly killed off by feather hunters, but then, after years, reappeared at the site of one of the deserted breeding colonies, Torishima Island in Japan.

I found the idea that I’d see it pretty laughable, but I went along with the group since I figured we’d see something, but sometimes even us cynics are wrong, and sure enough, where promised, there was a Noisy Pitta. A pitta, in Sydney, in winter, is a pretty mega bird. Not that we lingered to look, we were on a mission.

We actually spent considerable time searching unsuccessfully for this highly sought-after bird; however I did suspect they were not gone, as several hunters I interviewed knew the bird and claimed it still existed.
