The Green-winged Teal ( Anas crecca carolinensis ) is North America’s smallest dabbling duck and taken by hunters second only to the Mallard. The little stiff-tails are almost year-round at Jamaica Bay though almost all leave to breed in the summer and in the depths of winter, when the ponds are almost completely frozen, they tend to head for open water. These birds (usually juveniles) are clearly linked to the growing breeding population in the region. Pallid Swifts were already back at their breeding sites, while the marshes provided a host of waders, including year-ticks such as Whimbrel, Curlew Sandpiper and Kentish Plover. These are Dunlins.

But such a shallow water depth doesn’t work for our many duck species, and these, along with most gulls, terns, grebes, and larger shorebirds, were nowhere to be seen after the first two weeks of January. Adams, the refuge is one of the few breeding locations for Sandhill Cranes in Washington. Fish and Wildlife Service cannot effectively restore the lake or other natural hydrology. The refuge now supports most of the nesting Sandhills in Washington, with around 25 breeding pairs.

Stilt Sandpipers were around in numbers and still sporting a nice percentage of breeding plumage. There are swallows and terns, raptors and geese, ducks and gulls. Short-billed Dowitcher numbers were down from my visit two weeks ago but there were still plenty to see. Of course, shorebirds are only part of the draw on the East Pond.

When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there. I am used to seeing young Gadwall at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, sometimes under less-than-ideal circumstances , but I rarely get a chance to see an entire brood of ducklings close enough to get some pictures.
