The little stiff-tails are almost year-round at Jamaica Bay though almost all leave to breed in the summer and in the depths of winter, when the ponds are almost completely frozen, they tend to head for open water. So off to the lake I went, to see which ducks and shorebirds were still here, and which had already left. This meant that the remaining banks of ducks were beyond the clear range of my optics. But it was the Long-billed Dowitchers who were really rocking their breeding plumage. How on earth do they breed so quickly up north?)

As it turned out, the remaining water was too shallow for ducks, except a few Northern Shovelers. Admittedly, early May is too late to find most duck species in Michoacán, even in a good year.) In fact, I can see many more of these ducks, much closer to home. It was only a bit better for shorebirds and egrets.

In my imagination, the job of a male Australian Brush Turkey is pretty similar – removing or adding bits and pieces to his pile of rotting vegetation in order to get the right temperature to incubate the eggs buried underneath to hatch. They got the message right. For example, the White-headed Duck is nowadays a rarity in Europe (okay, excluding Spain, I know… that Spain …), but until some 50 years ago, it used to breed in Serbia. The hide overlooking the breeding colony of Red-footed Falcons. More or less, a proper picnic site. And so did I.

If you take a feral pigeon, bleach it and then batik it using the right colors, the result might be a Pink-necked Green Pigeon (1). Plus hopefully, you will be arrested for mistreating animals.

When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there. While regular in winter, Pygmy Cormorants do not breed in the vicinity and are absent in spring and summer. Ducks mostly migrate in November, reaching their peak by mid-December.

Apparently, there are no Lesser Scaup around here, so even I can be fairly confident to get this species identification right. It seems that this year, at least one Greater Scaup is using Nanhui as a wintering ground. I was hoping to see a Siberian Rubythroat , as it is a beautiful bird and I had not seen one this season yet.

My friend on the end of the line got right to the point: “What does a Kingfisher look like?” This is the 3rd year for these most northerly known breeding pair of loons. By the end of a day, the best bird was the White-tailed Eagle that caught and ate a fish right in front of us – a species they have seen in the UK only once. Pygmy Cormorant – winter (it breeds in Serbia, but overwinters in Belgrade). Ferruginous Duck – year round. White-tailed Eagle – year round (breeds inside the city).

With the first rains we get mass frog breeding events and the flooded land is covered in tadpoles. Plumed Whistling Ducks, Wandering Whistling Ducks, Grey Teal, Pacific Black Ducks and Hardheads are prolific and Whiskered Terns fly low over the flooded land. Another flooded track onto the station.
