Many are familiar with dissecting owl pellets, but several birds will caste a pellet including hawks, eagles, gulls, herons and heck, I once witnessed a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher hack up a small one. Sometimes, I feel that competing bird conservation groups are trying too hard to get my attention and give the impression that just by sitting here on my futon and breathing, I have killed several birds. I just looked over at my husband–bam 5 birds dead. I’m now petting my rabbit Dougal, 6 more birds dead.

To plenty others it is a beuatifully accessible patch of lowland rainforest, the perfect location to pick up a host of lowland birds. At any rate, my brief visit to Sepilok showed me that it is a worthy destination in its own right. In retrospect I would have picked trying to hit both, but perhaps that would have been unsatisfying too.

Lots of squirrels, chipmunks, deer, rabbits. Birds seem to be mostly some kind of common looking grayish speckled yard birds that I don't know what they are. Idk, generic store brand bird lol. but that's pretty much it for mammals. Maybe some kind of grackle? Ocassional robins, sparrows, crows.

Last Saturday Grant had to go to Geelong for the day and so I took the chance to go birding for the day while he was hard at work. The very first bird on our list was a Great Horned Owl responding to a screech owl call and, at another site, the Eastern Screech-Owls themselves made a brief whistle then passed over our heads, tiny round shapes against the sky in the gathering daylight.
