In Costa Rica, we enjoy healthy numbers of Whimbrels , a few annual wintering Long-billed Curlews that choose to lord over the flats of the Gulf of Nicoya, and good numbers of an equally impressive prairie bird, the Marbled Godwit.

Why does this little Screech Owl look so horrified? Somehow they manage to get the bird or animal to a rehabilitator, even though finding one is often a feat in itself. We receive nestling owls who have been fed nothing but hamburger, whose bones are so brittle from lack of calcium that they break when they try to stand.

We walked some of the trails at the reserve, and I had spotted a large bird hovering in mid-air, almost like a helicopter, just with more flapping. Peering through my binoculars, I saw a white bird with black spots on the undersides of the wings. Life-bird for me! Historic buildings at Elkhorn Slough.

Anyone with more than a couple of hours to kill could easily make a quick birding foray out from the airport. Have a small amount of Singaporean dollars to pay for taxis, trains and drinks.
