As I mentioned last week, social distancing is widespread but still voluntary here in Mexico, so there are no limitations on being able to get out and enjoy nature. While birding along the highway, a younger man on a motorcycle stopped to talk with me. It was a fine day of lonely birding. Still, I can’t complain.

Fed by the freshwater of Henderson Creek, the bay eventually flows into the Gulf of Mexico. Unlike many other estuaries in this part of Florida, Rookery Bay is protected by the Estuarine Research Reserve system, and remains almost entirely undeveloped. Rookery Bay is dominated by mangrove, a mix of Red, White, and Black varieties.

This little town of about 100 is located right next to what is considered the largest coral reef in all of Mexico [link] which is very well protected with in the boundaries of a Federal Marine Reserve. Quiet, peaceful, with no people to bother us, and of course, lots of birds. This is the large house.

Needless to say, there was little time left over for birding. Tallahassee is surrounded by lakes, springs, and forest, located only 30-45 minutes from the Gulf of Mexico. When you travel north of La Paz, Mexico, staying on the Sea of Cortez side of the Baja, you will encounter the phosphate mines of San Juan De La Costa. There is very little fresh water, at least to be found year round, but the bird populations all seem to do just fine. After you pass the mine, things change quite a bit.

The country of Mexico as a whole, is host to 27 different species of doves, with the California Baja Sure home to six. There is of course the dry, cactus strewn desert areas, but with mountains up to 7000 feet, the habitat for our local birds is quite varied. The Baja, as it is known, is a truly diverse area.

For the last few months the sloping sides of the bridge met the water with no birds dotting its sand other than a few pigeons or gulls. In one big wave the Black Skimmers and Least Terns arrived on the Panhandle, filling the skies with their unique calls and patrolling the bays and Gulf of Mexico for prey.
