Not enough Woodpeckers

It is hard to imagine any birder not liking woodpeckers – they are the “motherhood and apple pie” of the avian world. The Bearded Woodpecker (Mkuze, South Africa) does not really look any more bearded than many other woodpeckers. The little red bit on the crown on this photo indicates that it is a male bird.

Once upon a time in Bojcinska Forest

Gazetted as the “nature monument” in 2013, one of the few remaining – Bojcinska Forest by the village of Progar covers 670 ha / 1650 ac, with around 108 bird species and some 60 species of mammals. The most numerous birds are Common Chaffinches. By law, the foresters should have left 5 mature trees per hectare, but nothing remained.

Alabama Man Pleads Guilty to Killing Protected Birds

Alexander Alvarez of Atmore, Alabama, has pled guilty to “killing migratory birds and selling the feathers on the black market” in a killing spree that dates back to 2006. It’s nice to see laws against killing birds and selling their feathers enforced.

For now, I present a story of an excellent day''s birding on a visit to Los Angeles last week.]. It was 7:04am when we saw our target bird. Common birds to the southern California birder, wonderful sights to me. Where to bird next? Just, regular old Acorn Woodpeckers , loud and persistent. I was overjoyed.
