Getting familiar with birds is a process. As a child, poring through the pages of the Encyclopedia of Animal Life (I was gifted this 25 years before I appeared in Audubon magazine myself) birds gripped my attention. The best place I could come up with that was within a short drive of my in-laws’ place in Yorba Linda was the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in nearby Irvine, only a quick twenty-minute drive away. Greater White-fronted Goose is a decent bird for Orange County but it lacks the panache of a Vermilion Flycatcher.

Very shallow and short slalom kayaks are good if you want to explore backwaters, paddling through inundated riparian forests, left and right around the trees, or below low branches of half fallen, rotting trunks hollowed by woodpeckers. Some of them were always uncommon in the region, others are highly localised, some are hard to notice among thousands of similar birds, but others were abundant recently and one of them still is, despite the decrease in numbers.
