Given how hot and sometimes humid it is in Shanghai in July, it is a wonder there are any birds here in this month, particularly taking into account that most bird nests are not air-conditioned. One of the reasons stated is “the benefits of the people” (not the birds). Still, a few spend the summer here.

A Year of Birding in Costa Rica- Highlights and a Few Birds Missed

Another year of birding in Costa Rica has come to an end, another one begins. I bet some tanager flocks will be in the cards; birding in Costa Rica tends to deliver. It’s 2023 already and I have already started this year of birding. A male American Redstart flashed its Halloween finery and other birds flitted into view.

These are the types I recognise: Coffee Break Birding – 10-15 minutes, usually not planned ahead but squeezed out of your schedule. It is a good option if you know that there is that one special bird.

As we kept paddling, I continued, “It helps me remember when birds come and when they leave. Perhaps most importantly, I conclude, I keep track of the birds I see because I like to, because it’s fun.
