Crested Ibis Chicks in Japan

The first Crested Ibis chicks to hatch in the wild in Japan in 36 years were caught on camera on 22 April. The birds, reintroduced from captive-bred stock from China, are perhaps the most Japanese of birds, with the scientific name Nipponia nippon.

A Terek Sandpiper flagged in Japan visits Australia

I had only just written about the observation of a Little Tern flagged in Taiwan last week when another flagged bird from overseas placed itself in our path! Of course this is a risky business when dealing with birds, which could fly off at short notice! Finally some photographs of our visitor from Japan!

Japanese Night Heron in Shanghai

Anyway, after a long walk, getting very wet (the dog even more, as he likes splashing around in the rice paddies that are currently flooded), I decided to do a bit of birding. Later, using the car as a hide, I could approach the bird quite closely (I love the feeling of being invisible to birds in a car), and watched it for almost two hours.

Birding in Nanhui, Shanghai in October 2019

So, this post just shows 25 birds I spotted at Nanhui (coastal Shanghai) in October 2019. A typhoon in Japan blew a few Brown-eared Bulbuls in – they are common in Japan but quite rare here. One of the birds seemed somewhat incompetent in handling the seeds of the local trees. After a few days, they left again.

A Japanese in China

For Japan, there are only two species listed – again the Ashy Minivet, but also the Japanese Minivet (mostly called Ryukyu Minivet elsewhere), a Japanese endemic which is not on the China list. So, it was kind of exciting to see first one, later two Ryukyu Minivets at my regular birding spot at Nanhui, Shanghai.
