In Shanghai, May is the month with a chance to see the regional popstars of the birding world – male Japanese and Amur Paradise Flycatchers. It is on its way to breeding grounds mainly in Japan and thus only briefly stays here. The female is less impressive but still a nice bird to see. But that is fine.

They have been here for several months and are currently changing into their breeding plumage and fattening up. It won’t be long and we will watch them fly off into the sunset as they make their journey north to breed. Along Broome’s coastline we encounter literally hundreds of Red-necked Stint among all the flocks of migratory shorebirds that make Australia their home during the non-breeding season. Christmas Shearwaters Much less common that their larger relatives, but at the same time their habit of surface breeding means they are always around to find in certain spots. These attractive petrels should have been around Japan when this shot was taken! Pretty neat bird though. To be an albatross is to move!

Some of the Grey-tailed Tattlers have managed to find some shade from the 39c (102f) temperature under the large rock, but mostly the birds are relying on the cooler temperature on the wet sand and rocks after the tide has dropped. Most of the Red Knot are in very good breeding plumage now and they do stand out very well on the grey rocks.

Here in Europe, alba wagtails are so incredibly common that the vast majority of birders brush aside any small black-white-and-grey bird with a long tail as a White Wagtail and don’t invest any amount of time in studying the bird.

It is kind of rare to see a Fairy Pitta during Shanghai’s spring migration as those passing through are all adults rather than inexperienced chicks, and they are in a rush getting to their breeding grounds – but I was lucky. This should not be a problem in Shanghai as the pitta has not been reported to breed here.
