Japanese Night Heron in Shanghai

10,000 Birds

Anyway, after a long walk, getting very wet (the dog even more, as he likes splashing around in the rice paddies that are currently flooded), I decided to do a bit of birding. Later, using the car as a hide, I could approach the bird quite closely (I love the feeling of being invisible to birds in a car), and watched it for almost two hours.

Birding Shanghai in March 2024

10,000 Birds

Birding Shanghai has its own specific annoyances apart from birds not showing up. Finally, there are specific restrictions for foreigners – I guess we might steal some vital state secrets that have some kind of relationship with the local birds. Tianmashan had two interesting birds in March. One, a Ryukyu Minivet.

One of the birds seemed somewhat incompetent in handling the seeds of the local trees. After a few days, they left again.

The popstars are back: Paradise Flycatchers in Shanghai

10,000 Birds

A characteristic of most but not all Paradise Flycatchers is the long tail of the male bird (tail length is thought to be a criterion by which females select their partners – please insert your own pornographic joke here). not their own). Fear not, science has an answer: about 1.16

Birding Chongming Island in summer

10,000 Birds

Not professionally – these people come in SUVs and probably never recapture their gas money from the fish they catch (though come to think of it, neither do I with my bird photos). This is ok as birds do not have teeth anyway). One strange thing about Chongming is the inevitable presence of people fishing. End of side note.
