So, this post just shows 25 birds I spotted at Nanhui (coastal Shanghai) in October 2019. A typhoon in Japan blew a few Brown-eared Bulbuls in – they are common in Japan but quite rare here. One of the birds seemed somewhat incompetent in handling the seeds of the local trees. After a few days, they left again.

Mid-February is an early start for spring – even this far south – but spring is spring, and birds were waiting. There were birds singing everywhere. On a recent visit to Tokyo, Japan, I came across a beautiful bird that I took to be a White’s Thrush , Zoothera dauma. My Japanese field guide, published in 1982, calls my bird White’s Ground Thrush and prefers the Turdus genus. Where there is a description of one of the birds, the author fails to mention which one.

Wedge-tailed Shearwaters The commonest of the two shearwater species you can find on the island, this species has burrows all over the place. They are also one of the more vocal species on the island, braying like lost souls under the house we lived in. Pretty neat bird though. These guys get around!
