Chinese Penduline T**s are not particularly woke birds. White’s Thrush is described as “burly” on eBird – not entirely unjustified, I guess, but this description fails to capture the way the intricate patterns of the bird make for great camouflage and also for its own kind of beauty. Maybe the grandparents help.

A male Japanese Paradise Flycatcher is one of those birds that can easily make your day. Hard to show bird photos of Nanhui without including a Siberian Rubythroat. But I digress).

Set in an abandoned oil refinery where wildlife is slowly regaining control save for the desperate attempts of golfers to retain all eighteen holes, industrial ghosts loom over rolling freshwater lakes bordered by fifty foot tall trees. The subtle white edging to the gape of this bird indicates it is near breeding time.

I first met Robert Gallardo in 2009, when I made my first visit to the Neotropics for the Mesoamerican Bird Festival in Honduras. He has recorded over 20 new bird records for Honduras, dozens of new butterflies, new orchid records and even new species for science. I bet we number well into the hundreds of thousands.
