Fortunately, I live in Trinidad and Tobago – a twin-island nation that boasts the second highest density of bird species in the world. Activity was quite muted, the birds were quietly and unhurriedly going about their business. I wish them well – as the fisherfolk informed me that poaching of these birds continues.

Common Nightingales were singing, a squadron of Dalmatian Pelicans was in the air and everything was exactly where it should be, including myself. During December and January the temperature is usually in excess of 45c/113f and for more than six months each year the temperature exceeds human body temperature! Out of just under 200 bird species I observed this year in SE Europe, there are 6 threatened species. Some of them were always uncommon in the region, others are highly localised, some are hard to notice among thousands of similar birds, but others were abundant recently and one of them still is, despite the decrease in numbers.

We were looking for turtle tracks, but my eyes were drawn to the dozens and dozens of birds feeding and resting as the sun brightened the sky. Looking for turtle tracks (but also birds and shells). Brown Pelicans and Laughing Gulls still appeared as silhouettes in the dim light, flying or resting on old wooden pilings out in the waves.

Brown Pelicans , and the northernmost Brown Booby breeding colony on this side of the Pacific. And, the birds are awesome. Ringer Anhingas and darters , cormorants and shags , frigatebirds , gannets and boobies , pelicans , and the tropicbirds all share a characteristic found in no other living bird: Their feet are totipalmate.

My prints are often the only human prints on the beach and I see them increase as the tides decrease during the monthly cycle and wash away on the big tides. Australian Pelican prints I recently watched a small flock of Great Knot walking along the tide edge as they watched the tide fall and then flew out onto the reef to feed.

We have just been away camping and birding and had an amazing time. It is only a short drive in over a small hill to the bird hide at the billabong. I also love large congregations of birds. I take comfort in that, when I see a huge flock of birds, I feel so insignificant, it’s liberating.
