The Collins Bird Guide 2nd edition from 2009 was a much hated taxonomical revolution/nightmare, changing just about everything. For a while I was considering together with Jacob, whom I met on Helgoland during my month of volunteering at the bird observatory there, to meet up for a short birding outing on a weekend. We still focused on the birds of course and saw quite a good number of species, although few were unexpected.

The only bird-related activity I can think of is looking at bird photos I took in Singapore in 2015, and adding some irrelevant comments to them. Presumably, birds living in Singapore do not understand German. Seeing a Rufous Woodpecker for the first time, I thought it looked kind of weird. “Odd, me?”

We were heading to the Djerdap (Iron Gates) Gorge National Park, stretching along the south bank of the Danube in eastern Serbia, to do the 400 km / 250 mi bird tour interconnecting possibly the very best sites around Belgrade reachable within a day. The deep beech forest of Djerdap was still full of birds.

She also has a growing interest in birds, although she considers herself a newcomer to the field. It is at the edge of the Grunewald, or Green Forest, which is alleged to have Black Woodpeckers haunting its depths. In addition to a species of bird I really wanted to see but didn’t, there is also a beer garden at one of the Schlachtensee, perfect for refreshments as we made our way around the lake, a five-kilometer walk.
