Do you toss the bird your leftovers? And if you have a small kid and are in the vicinity of some ducks and geese? Do you feed the birds then? It seems like the people that run an awful lot of parks don’t want you feeding the birds. Wild birds should not be coming up to people looking for food.

I hope everyone participated in at least one day of the four day Great Backyard Bird Count of 2018. As I walked out on my back porch on Friday morning, the first day of the count, it was a cool, clear day and the birds were very active at the feeders. Fun birding! John from A DC Birding Blog , and Patrick from The Hawk Owl’s Nest at Jamaica Bay at 8 AM Saturday morning for some birding. But Red-winged Blackbirds weren’t the only birds that returned in numbers. I wrote previously about the prolific birding that is to be had in the small town of Baringo, Kenya. One of my top ten bucket list birds made itself very visible even before the sun broke over the horizon. Drifting slower and looking closer, we observed a tiny Malachite Kingfisher hunting in the sheltered shallows.

Mum suggested Covenham Reservoir, because even after rain the track should be fairly dry and there were bound to be birds! Covenham Reservoir is the largest stretch of inland water in Lincolnshire and although it is used for various water sport activities during the year it is also used by many species of birds. The day before the marmot encounter, I spotted an American Robin on my lawn; the night before that, the distinctive sound of a small flock of Snow Geese sounded from the sky above my apartment, heading north. During the winter the birds are dependent on small fissures in the sea ice kept open by the currents of the bay.

Apparently this is not uncommon for this species, but it takes some getting used to for a birder to pull up alongside what is an ostensible rarity in the state and snap a photo of the birds with your cell phone as you idle in the road. The other birds took some doing to find. These, however, were as wary as lawn geese.

First I noticed a red cap – a male, then striped flanks and pale-red undertail, but couldn’t see its wing because some part of the bird remained hidden by a branch at any given time. This whole area floods during the wet season and water remains throughout the year most years and attracts a lot of bird-life. It is worth having your windows open as you drive slowly in and check all of the many boab trees for bird-life. If you are interested in observing shorebirds at roost or feeding you need to ultimately turn to a tide chart to see where the sea is and if there will be any birds visible! We were content to bird-watch the area on foot and there was plenty to observe. Thousands of Geese on the move on dusk. Eurasian Curlew.

Out of just under 200 bird species I observed this year in SE Europe, there are 6 threatened species. Some of them were always uncommon in the region, others are highly localised, some are hard to notice among thousands of similar birds, but others were abundant recently and one of them still is, despite the decrease in numbers.

When you are able to find a lagoon that is land-locked and offers great birding and you are able to walk around the edge it is a delight. The trees are now incredibly tall and are currently flowering offering some great birds. It would still offer excellent birding opportunities from the picnic area. Tree planting is good!

Like many “wildlife areas” it is open to waterfowl hunting during the season. On the way up we stopped about 20 miles south of the wildlife area at the Grass Lake rest stop on highway 97 where we spotted some unexpected birds. The road into the wildlife area was a treasure trove of birds.

Old cars, antique gas pumps, and neon lit motels, were just up Jeanne’s photographic alley, and Lake Tucumcari was sure to be a birding hot spot for me.
