This last year of the twenty-teens was a monumental birding year for me. I saw 863 species of birds, bringing my life list to 1,820. I birded Uganda, which was my first time on the continent of Africa. Such travel brings a lot of birds and the 863 species I saw this year is the most species I have ever seen.

My 8-year old daughter got interested in birds from a VERY early stage. By age 2 she could identify over 10 species of birds in our Johannesburg, South Africa, yard by call alone. So I guess for some people birding skills come naturally but, for others, birding skills need to be learnt. And perhaps 20 others by sight.

I’ve stated in the past that I thought that the Pukeko, or Purple Swamphen, is New Zealand’s most iconic bird after the kiwi. Tui are large members of the honeyeater family, one of two species found in New Zealand. The dusting of white feathers on the collar gave this species its old English name, the Parson Bird.

Just a quick post today to appreciate one of New Zealand’s most attractive birds, the Paradise Shelduck. This is brought about by a visit to Karori Wildlife Sanctuary/Zealandia, where I was able to catch up with the ducklings that I first saw back in the spring. Both, howveer, are attractive birds. Run along the same lines as the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, the site has had a large fence placed around it and the introduced mammals removed. I was visiting with three friends, none of whom were birders as such, although they were at least used to my birding interests (one had accompanied me to several birding sites before).

There have been some new developments since we lived here in the late 1990′s and the new housing area in the suburb of Gunn has a lake system called Sanctuary Lakes. There is a path around Sanctuary Lakes and a car-park, but it can easily be reached from all the surrounding area along footpaths. Bar-breasted Honeyeater.

One of Australia’s largest and most magnificent flying birds, this was a real treat for me. I didn’t have long to spend at the sanctuary, having not really planned to visit it at all. Like with Mareeba the surrounding vegetation was savannah, and I saw a range of wetland and bush birds.
