Usually, maize is on the menu, only occasionally carrion or dead trout from a nearby fish farm. The next morning, through Yellowhammers and Eurasian Skylarks singing all around me, I went birding. Yes, yes, I know, not countable – it’s not a bird. Never mind, it’s not a bird. Yet, not the bear, I’ll have to return for it.

South Dakota went a different way, designating the Ring-necked Pheasant as the state bird in 1943. Males are territorial, and may act aggressively towards other avian ground species.

The Christmas Bird Count was the answer. The IWC census starts from mid-January following the logic that it is the period when the birds have reached their wintering grounds and are rather static, so the chance of double-counting the same flock is minimal. But it is so frustrating to pass the birds by without IDing them!
