The little red bit on the crown on this photo indicates that it is a male bird. The species name “tukki” is not derived from a beloved but now extinct Eastern European car brand but from the Sumatran word for woodpecker. The pink lipstick shape on the face of the bird counterintuitively indicates that this is a male.

Shallows provide an ideal spawning ground for almost 50 fish species and submerged islands breeding ground for more than 100 bird species. I suck at bird songs but this one sounds more like something coming from a pinball machine. Along the cliffs before the citadel, another great bird shows up – a small flock of Alpine Swifts.
