The tracks of two young Polar Bear skirt a crack in the sea ice in Admiralty Inlet. Wildlife concentrates at the Floe Edge, and although we just missed Narwhal as pack ice moved in just after we arrived, the place was littered with Polar Bear. Still, with that many bear you have to stay vigilant.

In the morning, still sleepy, we enter the jungle, where a sounder of Indian Boars (a long-maned subspecies Sus scrofa cristatus ) is watching us, standing among the first trees, right next to the road. These days, the species shares habitats with Tigers, Snow Leopard, Bears, etc. One White-eyed Buzzard has turned its back to us.

The System also protects bison , bighorn sheep , panthers , elk , grizzly bears , manatees , and ocelots , among others. Individually, many NWRs protect crucial bird habitat. This is very bad news for a group that is largely nocturnal and has adapted to a secretive lifestyle, and is thus best detected by its tracks and signs.

That’s right – birds eating clay. By twos and fours they arrive and scatter in small groups among the canopy to their favorite perches in iron, cecropia and aguaje palm trees. Wicked, right? So, like a football stadium named after an insurance company, the broadbill ended up bearing a name celebrating a sponsor. eBird gives the Indigo Flycatcher a very positive review, calling it a “beautiful little gem of a flycatcher” Apparently, Indigo Flycatchers mainly hunt in groups, as described here.
