GUYANA–Simply Delicious Birding!

Ok, maybe not the vampire bat…but some of the more “cuddly” species are actually quite easy to see. Another lovely red skittle that I had the privilege of spotting on my first visit to Guyana in 2008 is the aptly-named Blood-colored Woodpecker found in the coastal areas in and around Georgetown.

From all manners of spider to beetle to frog to bat – there is something for everyone. Stands of large trees attract the largest woodpecker in T&T: Crimson-crested Woodpecker. They aren’t abundant by any means, but nevertheless are either seen or heard daily.

February Birds from Costa Rica

Sometimes, this one forages for insects and bats near street lights adjacent to forest. Black-cheeked Woodpecker. The common woodpecker of the Caribbean lowlands. Not common but regular at various sites with larger areas of rainforest. Black-and-white Ow. One of several beautiful owls (aren’t they all?) Great Green Macaw.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of October 2016)

At least one weekend a year, bats–particularly the vampiric kind–command more attention than birds, at least from most people. I saw lots of different kinds of woodpeckers this weekend, but that big, honking Pileated always wins out over the others for Best Bird honors.
