I have already written about my love of the Paso Ancho site, though you would have to scroll back to my very first pieces with 10,000 Birds to read those articles. The day started out with some typical monsoon-season cloudiness, so my first photos suffered a bit from low lighting. One allowed me to get almost embarassingly close.

Unlike this article’s header photo, this second shot shows the mistletoe berries which are this species’ favorite food. This area did seem to be suffering quite a bit from the drought. The area around this town, at a tropical altitude of “only” 1,000 feet, is characterized by rather drab thorn forest.

The egret suffered “multiple fractures to the wing and neck area,” the report said. But it is especially jarring for birders as the bird is described in the article as a “little egret” which surely many birders would have wanted to see. Jere Martin Patterson Jr. of Largo, Florida, is charged with animal cruelty.

There is also the usual article about the first sighting of the species at a new location. The Yellow-bellied Tit suffers a bit less from such jokes. After this longish and completely irrelevant introduction, finally here is a photo of the first bird of September 30th, a Black-winged Cuckoo Shrike. How exciting.
