Lost Animals is a book about what was lost and witnesses to the loss—how the bird or mammal was viewed, often for the last time, through the lens of a camera. Thus, the earlier the species has died out, the fuzzier and grainier the photo.

While I harbor mixed feelings about zoos in general, this facility seems to make the best effort possible to keep animals in interesting enclosures, move them to different areas of the zoo to maintain novel surroundings, and invest money and space into a 30 acre mixed species enclosure, where the animals can move freely.

High up at almost 4500 meters, some Alpine Accentors were posing in the sunshine, justifying the description in the HBW as “large, attractive accentor” (though eBird seems to disagree, instead characterizing the species as a “stocky, stout, and unobtrusive bird”). I side with the HBW on this issue. So undignified.

For once, eBird gives a good description of the Asian Glossy Starling, calling it a “Fierce-looking, large songbird” As are humans, this species is fairly urbanized – it “sometimes enters urban areas to roost, e.g. in Singapore” (HBW). Plus hopefully, you will be arrested for mistreating animals.

Driving slowly along the track towards the levee separating this area from the Danube backwaters, a largish marten-like animal once ran across the track. About the size of a hare, it is more clumsily jumping, than running… and that tail… It was the European Otter !

Many of those species also nest in the park. One of my favorite species is the Water Ouzel , more commonly known now as the American Dipper ( Cinclus mexicanus ).

Busch Gardens’ animal care team has something new keeping them up at night – a four-week-old baby cheetah that requires regular feedings and 24-hour care. When zoo keepers saw that the baby was not eating and having trouble gaining weight, they made the decision to hand-raise him. Only approximately 12,400 cheetahs remain in the wild.
