Birding Mount Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo

When not climbing, he collected species, and thus a number of birds are named after him. Three of them can be found on Mount Kinabalu, and local bird guides speak admiringly of colleagues who have seen all three of them on one day (we only managed two). Of course, only chemists have a rough idea what that might mean.

The wet season is still in full effect and that translates to dynamic birding in every habitat. Sometimes, you gotta travel to find the breaks in the rain but when you do, the toucans are calling, and parrots, raptors, and other large birds are trying to dry out in the treetops. Each year, I hope to identify at least 600 species.

Noah Strycker, author of The Thing with Feathers and Among Penguins , will be doing a world-wide Big Year in 2015. Rather than the frantic travel of a “normal” Big Year this one will feature one continuous trip covering lots of turf with a particular focus on the tropics because that is where the birds are.
