Talking of gulls, I had a new meeting with an old acquaintance, the Black-headed Gull ringed in 2013 in the north of the country that I already met twice in 2015 and now again – I even recognized its ring because the combination of letters sounds a bit like “Yahoo”. There is a breeding pair of White-tailed Eagles at the Veliko Ratno Island and they can be seen year-round, but the best chances are in winter, when they hunt ducks around the island. Pygmy Cormorants are regular, occasionally a White-tailed Eagle and during cold spells, Goosanders.

As for myself, in January of 2013, I finally took a much anticipated trip up to their world of ice and snow in northeastern Minnesota in search of them. It was the Snowy Owl, taking no chances while an immature Bald Eagle was passing by. Within minutes, I spotted a crisp, cold white bird flying right in front of the car.

A large raptor just across the hilltop… Georgos says that at this time of year, we can expect Common Buzzard , Booted , Lesser Spotted and White-tailed Eagles. The bird is not showing again, so we use the elimination system: the first and the last are way too different, and dealing with the other two, we ID it as a Lesser Spotted Eagle.

What did I predict back in December of 2013? I am amused that I have Golden Eagle in Queens before Black Vulture or Northern Goshawk. Good times!

Steve answers: Bonelli’s Eagle ! A pair of these eagles breed nearby, but this bird shows no wish to reappear and show itself better. I hope it will show again… and there is a raptor with a strong pale and dark contrast… the same Osprey? Still, the bird isn’t too cooperative, glides low over the ridge and disappears behind it.

White-bellied Sea-Eagles can be observed cruising the coastline year round with their magnificent wing span and Brahminy Kites are often observed too. The largest bird of prey is the Wedge-tailed Eagle and is more often observed a few kilometres from town, though we have seen it in town over the years we have lived here.
