That circular, uninviting body of water marks the main crater of Poas Volcano, a mountain that hosts the most accessible and nearest area of quality bird habitat to the Juan Santamaria airport. Access to the local ephemeral lakes remains closed to vehicles, which means the only access is on foot and as such we are discovering the bird life to be particularly good when we do good bush walking into these areas. It was very hard to try and capture the evidence and not have other birds or dragonflies in the way, but I got evidence!

I have followed the breeding activity of the Pied Oystercatchers in Broome along Cable Beach since July 2000 when I found the first nest site and the birds have continued to use the same territories, though there have been some partner changes. As I have explained before these islands are the best place for a lot of the birding here because they are more easily protected from introduced mammals which wreck such havoc on the wildlife here. In 2009 the island as returned to the local iwi (tribe), but it is still managed by the Department of Conservation. Or, at least, I did.

We had one pair attempt 5 times in 2009, so they don’t give up easily! Sadly a lot of eggs are lost to feral cats and chicks are sometimes taken by birds of prey. If the parents chase the bird they may drop the chick, but from a great height this is a fatal injury.
