Chaka is a small town, with just about 2000 people. Fortunately, I share this preference with birds, which we found away from the lake, mostly in some semi-desert areas. “ Not the bird’s fault, I guess. Probably chocolate as well, but only when there are no bird watchers around.

Pied Oystercatcher breeding season is here again!

This year the first clutch was laid at the end of May and this is the first time we have had eggs laid in May along Cable Beach since 2000. This pair of birds, which we presume to be the exact same pair, has been laying eggs in this area since 2008. appeared first on 10,000 Birds. However, the news was very sad.

To be honest, this is because the birding has been a bit slow of late. And our rainy season, which to my relief continues to be abundant, does mean that birds no longer concentrate around sources of water. These birds, however, were seen at “only” 2300 m (7550 ft).

Thirteen years of weekly posts

The nest site has moved occasionally since I first observed one on Cable Beach in 2000. I could observe where the family had come down to the ocean at night on the big tides. You will note that the footprints are pretty large for a small bird, but they appear to hatch out ready for walking. One large Pied Oystercatcher family !
