Since I found the first Pied Oystercatcher nest on Cable Beach in July 2000 I have learnt that the eggs rarely hatch due to predation and if they do hatch then a fully fledged chick is a rare and wonderful outcome. The nest scrapes are made by the smaller male bird, which she then checks and eventually will lay eggs in.

The nest site has moved occasionally since I first observed one on Cable Beach in 2000. You will note that the footprints are pretty large for a small bird, but they appear to hatch out ready for walking. In my previous blog about Bird Photography Equipment , I reviewed the Canon EF 300 f/4 lens with the teleconverter Kenko C-AF 2X Teleplus Pro 300 DGX. I came across this while testing the 300 with kenko 2X TC and there we no birds to shoot. In this case the 7D has been set in manual, f/18, speed 1/100, ISO between 2000 and 3200.
