One week later, I am strolling thru the Baja Sur Cactus Sanctuary, with a much more comfortable, sunny 86 degrees. This small bit of arid land that has been set aside to display, and preserve the various species of cactus from this region is about a 45 minute drive from La Paz. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was either of a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers that he saw at the Ramshorn Livingston Sanctuary in Catskill, New York, while he was on a walk with his family.

Tui are large members of the honeyeater family, one of two species found in New Zealand. The dusting of white feathers on the collar gave this species its old English name, the Parson Bird. It was just such a bird I managed to catch in the act of defending its food the other day in Wellington’s Karori Sanctuary.

This species was discovered (shot, actually) in the 19th century, only to be lost through the entire 20th century. The Forest Owlet is an endemic species of this mountain range. Since its rediscovery in 1997, this species has been found at a number of new locations, several of which appear to hold significant populations.

One of the best examples in the world is the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on the northern California coast. The fence surrounding the facility is bordered by a dense mixed forest of pine and deciduous trees giving several sparrow and finch species a good location to hang out and observe the birders.

Tomtits are not a species I have ever talked much about on this blog. They were present in Karori Sanctuary but have declined as other species have prospered. They are a widespread species that shows quite a bit of variation: there are five subspecies that are quite distinctive. I’m not actually sure why this is.

Run along the same lines as the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, the site has had a large fence placed around it and the introduced mammals removed. Rare species, like North Island Brown Kiwi , have been reintroduced. This community based organisation has been working in rural Taranaki, near where I went up the mountain.
