Just two hours from the capital, is situated the Macao Sanctuary, a natural reserve located in the rain forest, in the mountains of the Costa Rican Central Pacific. The birding routes are easily accessible and go through the different micro-ecosystems and different habitats of the sanctuary, finding different species in each of them.

One of the many things I did not know about Delhi is that it is the capital city with the second-largest number of bird species (after Nairobi). Most of the time was spent in and around Sultanpur, a highly recommended bird sanctuary about 50 km from Delhi. Cattle Egret. Not a great shot, admittedly, but a great-looking bird.

This park protects the largest remaining tract of dry deciduous forest in the west of India, offering visitors 37 species of reptiles, 38 species of mammals and, not to be forgotten – almost 300 bird species. A low branch is decorated by a Green Bee-eater and a tree top above it holds several Cattle Egrets.

But, from the existing data, the authors have drawn a different conclusion – there is no proof that the breeding population ever existed, that the south of Africa was beyond the species range and that that all observations were of vagrant individuals. During my lifetime, this species was rare in my native Serbia, too.

Costa Rica enjoys an international reputation as an iconic birding location, bursting with epic Neotropical species and breathtaking natural attractions. But if the weather were better, I’d surely have loved this secluded sanctuary more. Nature lovers, however, will find the estate a special slice of paradise.
