I have read where the Verdin will raise two brood per year, but I have seen no proof of that in my field work. The dense prickly cactus aids in protection of the nest, making it very difficult to see in, let alone try to enter. The nest is lined with grass, leaves and feathers, and will have up to four blue-green eggs with red spots.

Fortunately, the very abundant 2018 rains raised the water level to heights I had never seen, and so far, that seems to be making up for this year’s poor rains. And I found this one because he was singing his heart out quite persistently, which certainly suggests a bird that wants to settle down and raise a family. Most Marbled Godwits breed in inland North America, and winter along the tropical coasts of Mexico and the Caribbean. Only one, in Mexico City, was far from the coast.
