Trogons, flycatchers and most conspicuous of the lot – a group of Channel-billed Toucans. I managed to see my first Loggerhead Turtle within the mangroves, an unfortunate soul that became trapped within the maze of roots during an exceptionally high tide and lost its life. Channel-billed Toucan.

Shearwater Chase in Costa Rica

At first, the birds were absent, it was just that one shearwater, a sad lost Eastern Kingbird flying low over the waves, and groups of Brown Boobies making a beeline to feeding grounds. a couple sea turtles, and a jumping sailfish but no birds. Including this one perched on a sea turtle.

Whenever we saw large groups of folks looking up into the trees, they were usually watching sloths. Heading up the inlet… were several Black River Turtles. Climbing into the kayak I noticed a Three-toed Sloth hanging in an overhanging tree. The sloths are a big draw in Costa Rica.
