I've received so many donation requests from "People Helping Horses" that I finally decided to send a donation. I've never been around horses much, but a friend of mine who has 3 horses and 2 burros (!) told me that horse groups have been hit particularly hard with the economy. Definitely one I want to follow.

Animal Cruelty at Texas Horse Farm

50 surviving horses were rescued. The Humane Society of the United States, SPCA of East Texas and Humane Society of North Texas worked with the Smith County District Attorney's Office to rescue 50 horses from a Lindale property. Undercover Video Sparks Calls for Canadian Ban on Horse Meat

Animal rights groups are calling for a ban on the sale of horse meat after disturbing video at a slaughterhouse in west Quebec was sent to the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition. It shows a parade of horses being stunned with what's called a captive bolt pistol. Captured on video, is one horse being stunned 11 times.

Horses have a good chance. The main strategy for horses is organisation. Horses live in groups. Would suprisngly rodents and small animals. They are quite fast and can hide in places predators can't reach like Holes, pieces of debris etc. So they can look out for each other. Not to mention their speed.

Montana Passes Horse Slaughterhouse Protection Measure

Montana has passed a law making it difficult to challenge the building of a horse slaughtering facility in that state. This bill specifically makes for groups that might oppose it to use the court system to do so. Tags: horse slaughter. The last such facility in the US closed in 2007.

Birding Inirida, Colombia, or river dolphins and hoatzins, part 2

In the Orinoco, the largest observed groups number 30, but average is just above five. We sailed right into a group of more than a dozen Hoatzins (cover photo, by Tyler Ficker) with their orange mohawks and blue facial skin. Yet, we had a good two hours or almost 50 kilometres by 75 horse-powered speedboat to reach Inirida at sunset.

My colleague Doug wrote me an email describing the whereabouts of these “rosy finches” and my wife had to manage my excitement with horse tranquilizer… What a fantastic little birds. Large groups of Hooded Merganser , Redhead , Franklin’s Gull , and other floaters were easily spotted. I flew into Denver from Mexico.
