Rather, I am speaking of what a certain group of birds must experience every day. These are the few species who prefer to spend their lives hanging upside-down. We each have reasons to give special love to certain species. And those species that like to hang upside-down definitely amuse me.

Owls as a group, for instance, have gone from omens of doom to adorable hipster mascots – I blame J. Now, some species of nighthawk have done excellent work. Another traditionally trendsetting group of scary birds that have evolved past their original branding of late are the corvids.

A typical description of the family is that of “a tropical African and Asian songbird that typically has a melodious voice and drab plumage”, another is “small, dull-colored passerine birds of Asia and Africa”, yet another states that they are “often rather plain” Individual species get even harsher reviews.

Few if any species are as emblematic of the Neotropics as Ramphastidae, the family that includes the toucans, toucanets, and aracaris. On the trip to Costa Rica that I just returned from I was pleased to see both of those species as well as Black-mandibled Toucan and Keel-billed Toucan. Yeah, it was a heck of a trip.

Their nest, which is one way of differentiating these species, is started with bark flakes and lumps of earth laid on the floor of the cavity; with a cup of finer bark shreds, grasses and rootlets, but mainly lined with fur, wool, hair, and feathers. After all, they are the species that got me started building nest boxes in the first place.

We might not get the variety of a New Jersey autumn but we do get major numbers of species that winter in South America. However, this year, we opted for a site that could also give a chance at Great Jacamar and a few other key resident species in addition to migrants. We saw them do their butterfly flight over the tree tops every day.
