The header photo above shows where the family rested shortly after the two chicks left the nest on Tuesday. The following day we returned to see if the family of Pied Oystercatchers had moved away from the nest site yet. The family had not moved far and the footprints were clearly visible in the soft sand.

The eggs hatched out around 20th June after 28 days of incubation and the Pied Oystercatcher family were soon on the move. This moves the family closer to a reef that gets exposed on low tides and better feeding opportunities. Usually the first thing we look for when we visit Pied Oystercatcher families is look for footprints.

The Groove-billed Ani is an odd-looking member of the Cuckoo family. The good news is that these are extremely vocal birds, so you will know when they are around — which they will be. The bad news is that they are all skulkers, so you may have trouble seeing them. They are residents, but not common ones.

It has been a few years since I could share some good news about the Pied Oystercatchers breeding along the coast near Broome. I introduced you to this Pied Oystercatcher family four weeks ago. Even the nest with two eggs in it has been predated now, but there is a new nest with two eggs in it nearby belonging to another pair.

A European Starling in New Zealand made the news this week. This particular species is not native to New Zealand (similar to its status in North America). The woman in the video found it as a chick at a few days old and hand reared it. In areas where starlings are introduced, the laws for keeping them as pets are relaxed.

I tweeted the good news and watched the birds on and off for the next couple of hours as the fledglings goofed off, tried out their wings, and mobbed their worn-looking parents.
