Almost as soon as we left the grounds we came a cross a feeding flock of Pygmy Ibon , a minute type of white-eye (already a small family), and then a handful of bizarre looking Dusky Broadbills (they look like they are manically grinning) perched over a river. Oh, there were Buffy Fish-owls. A female Crested Fireback.

It brings mammals, and frogs in profusion, and reptiles, and insects. We toured the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre after dark, and we did it by foot in a group that was just my family and a guide. This can also be a curse, as I have spent many nights wandering around seeing precisely nothing. Or nothing big at least. So many insects.

These strange birds are two species in their own family; White-necked or Yellow-headed, endemic to the Upper Guinea forests and Grey-necked or Red-headed, restricted to Lower Guinea forests. The rare Rufous Fishing Owl was one of the many species seen by the group here.

This Cape Francolin was raising a family less than a hundred metres from the main gate. The gardens are particularly famous for a nesting pair of Spotted Eagle-owls. When you stop to look at them, Helmeted Guineafowl are odd looking birds. This Egyptian Goose has perfected his smoldering come hither look. As is the Swee Waxbill.

I did finally get Snowy Owls in Queens , even if they did cause a bit of controversy. We had a wonderful family vacation in Germany and the Czech Republic during which I managed to do a bit of birding. I even chased after a Barred Owl ! Oh, and there were mammals too. fledgling Song Thrush about to be fed.

In addition to longtails and rats, Wingate battles developers (of course), a rare Snowy Owl that kills 5% of the cahow population (Wingate shoots the owl, to the dismay of many), and the U.S. Ultimately, the story always comes back to the cahows, whose population grows slowly. She uses both sources well.
