Note to other species: better do not rely on mature primary forests, as this may lead to extinction. This says more about my inability to differentiate between warbler species than about the rarity of the bird – but the bird was kindly singing. Also, do not smoke as it is not good for your health.

Birds of Kruger National Park covers the 259 species most frequently seen in the park, about half of the total number of birds documented there. This still leaves the user flipping through sections, looking for the species in question, though I don’t think there are many species with this habitat overlap.

I was waiting at the entrance gate for everyone in our group to gather, when I remembered that someone had told me about nesting owls at the Taj. Luckily, I didn’t have to look hard to find the Dusky Eagle-Owl’s nest. The species is crepuscular and nocturnal, but can sometimes be seen during the day.

Seeing 525 species was nice, as was the fact that I birded in four countries, nine of the fifty states in the United States, and fifty-one counties. I want to reach 500 birds in the ABA, get my Queens list to 295, see a total of at least 500 species, and get my World Life List to 1,100. But how did I see so many species this year?

To Spotlight or not to Spotlight?

It brings mammals, and frogs in profusion, and reptiles, and insects. We toured the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre after dark, and we did it by foot in a group that was just my family and a guide. We found some more sleeping birds, lots of frogs, and a Lesser Mousedeer – a new species for me! Or nothing big at least.
