This is how, I think, the “Crossley technique” works best—coverage of specific bird families that pose identification challenges to birders at all levels of skill. Juvenile retrices are narrower, more pointed at the tip, and often have a ‘V’-shaped notch cut out at the tip. I was really taken aback when I saw this.
