But some days, I also hear the loud calls of a Laughing Falcon. Not exactly a wetland, nor any other space where I would expect a Merlin, the mosaic of farm fields, urban areas, and coffee farms punctuated by a green thread of streamside forest apparently works. At least it does for a young bird, at least it has for a month.

On the opposite side is a smallish falcon, obviously too short-tailed for a Common Kestrel, a Eurasian Hobby first comes to mind… but a male Red-footed Falcon on migration it turns out to be. Two European Rollers await us on the wires, while one Eurasian Hoopoe flies by. I must digress further.

This is an inviting gravel road situated near Punta Uva that passes through lowland rainforest and a couple of small farms. The calling Collared Forest-Falcon was also cool, so was Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer (the species at the top of this post), and so were the 120 other plus species we had from 4:30 to 8 just on that one road.

Known as the Crested Bobwhite , this small quail persists in any number of weedy fields, even lives on some coffee farms. This morning, the surprise was the call of Laughing Falcon. So far south that another, more tropical bobwhite takes its place. Brown Jays also flutter by and those are just a few of the species that still occur.

Although the Aplomado Falcon is on the list, it’s not resident and there are few records, most of which seem to pertain to juveniles that wander into the country at this time of year. Normally the lighthouse is obscured in fog, but when we arrived the air was crystal clear, and in addition to seeing groups of Gray Whales migrating past, I spotted hundreds of Surf Scoters , a Pigeon Guillemot , and a pair of Peregrine Falcons from my perch atop the lighthouse cliff. Red-footed Falcons , Whiskered and Black Terns by mid-April, White-winged Terns are passing about a week later. While Saker and Peregrine Falcons have plummeted in the last decade, Red-footed Falcons are still holding on, breeding in the northern lowlands. Lately, I have been waking up to the vocal antics of Laughing Falcon , the newly split Gray-cowled Wood-Rail , Grayish Saltator , Melodious Blackbird , and this beautiful male Blue Grosbeak that sings about a block away. Just look for the biggest, darkest green spot and that’s the farm, the last sizeable remnant of intact rainforest in the area. We would find out shortly after arriving at the farm but first we had to traverse muddy pastures with hedgerows where Red-eyed Vireos and Summer Tanagers fed. What still lived there? The damaged forest.
