What this translates to is an array of bird families that are very similar to that on the mainland – motmots, toucans, jacamars, and antpittas to name a few – but each family is limited to one or two representatives. Again, here’s a video of this precise lek. T&T has three resident species of manakins.

Many a birder with years of experience in the Neotropical region has never ever seen or heard an RVG. Speaking of cats, I am reminded of an experience a co-worker of mine had while surveying birds years ago in Washington state. It was a ground-cuckoo family and they weren’t even shy!

Take note of this Greater Yellowlegs on the wall from a screengrab of a video of the Black Skimmer. Did the Black-bellied Whistling Duck represent his family, “showing face” as we say here in the Caribbean? Animals obviously see death and experience it as we do, so the question is not one of if, but of how.

I read Chris’s story and saw his video a couple of hours after his sister made it public on social media (I had been Facebook friends with Chris for several years, though I had never met him face-to-face). Because being a birder means you experience life through that framework. It was the same day George Floyd was killed.

I savor the timeless experience of scanning these tropical waves for storm-petrels and lost jaegers. Local guide and birder David Mora Vargas has been spending much of his time at his family’s farm in the Sarapiqui lowlands. A friend of mine, Juan Diego Vargas also made a fun video about the visit.
