While enjoying the family of Wattled Jacanas , a female Green Kingfisher flew in to an overhanging branch and sat there for several minutes. There are three Wattled Jacana chicks in this image, but they are designed to remain hidden.

We were happy to experience three birds of prey on this jaunt. There is also a family of Barn Owls on the premises, and I have briefly seen the largest of them (enormous!) They are even more awkwardly cute than adult Jacanas. A Roadside Hawk perched on a post next to, of course, a road. flying by at night.

Corey got his Best Bird of the Weekend early this weekend as while he and his family were making their way home from a week-long vacation in Cape Cod on Friday a Black-throated Gray Warbler was found in Queens at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. His wonderful family agreed to drive straight there before going home and Corey got a new Queens bird!

It is a bit of an outsider in the bulbul family, being only one of two bulbuls in the genus Spizixos (“chirping bulbul” – a bit strange as many other bulbuls including the omnipresent Light-vented Bulbul also chirp a lot). The Collared Finchbill is a bulbul, even though the name does not state this directly.

Presbycusis is age-related hearing loss in humans, but I have also discovered that birds, fish and amphibians do not experience presbycusis due to the fact that they can regenerate their cochlear sensory cells. So, whilst we get older and start to struggle to hear the birds they can still hear us!
