With more than 312 so far recorded bird species, Lake Kerkini National Park offers great birding year-round. Kerkini is one of the most important wintering areas throughout Europe.

For Europe, only very few books exist that cover the topic at all. So here it is, the review of Tracks and Signs of the Animals and Birds of Britain and Europe by Lars-Henrik Olsen. Those were amongst the most annoying field guides to use on the “continent” as so many potentially confusing species were left out.

I had just ended my ten-day birding adventure in Ecuador (which is a story for another time) when I decided, since I had an amazing time, to prolong my trip a bit longer before heading back to Europe. Its mood is not helped by the ambiguous review on eBird: “Although not actually pale, this brownish songbird is one of the plainer thrushes in its range” The Latin species name of the Dusky Thrush is eunomos (I guess that is Greek, but whatever) – meaning well-ordered. They also eat more when together with other people.

With 500 pages, this guide is a bit on the heavy side, but still not too much, having in mind that half of the region falls into the tropics and the edition is dealing with almost a thousand species (989 to be exact). Distribution maps show the relative abundance of a species in the region and also indicate resident or visiting status.

It helps that there is a little bird hide almost on top of the hill, guarded by a Chinese lady and attracting a substantial number of species of birds and birders. A Streak-breasted Scimitar Babbler made an early experience. There are some here, and compared to rainforests, they are surprisingly visible. So, what was there to see?

They are of the race islandica , a sub species of the nominate race, limosa. Rings are not the only way of marking birds, and with a number of species wing tags are more often used. Audouin’s Gull is an attractive species restricted as a breeding bird to the Mediterranean, but many winter in North Africa.

After that experience, I stopped complaining about their hides, realising that they are as good as they ever will be. For example, the White-headed Duck is nowadays a rarity in Europe (okay, excluding Spain, I know… that Spain …), but until some 50 years ago, it used to breed in Serbia. They got the message right.

The area is one of the most important in Greece for birds, comprising more than 270 species. Finally, of the at least 20 species of mammals present here, the otter, the jackal, and the wildcat certainly deserve a mention. Yet, much closer to me, on a bare salty ground, a little brown bird took flight singing her heart out.

There are two species in the Old World woodpecker genus that sounds like birds that birders would never be able to see. Eurasian Wrynecks are found breeding across the temperate zones of Europe and Asia. They are literal jinx birds in that their genus name is “ Jynx.”

Except for one species: I have a clear childhood memory of seeing black swans. To paraphrase Henry Ford: in medieval Europe, you could see a swan in any color so long as it is white. The very first thing we notice about this large member of the Galliformes is that there is a wild version and a domestic version, and although the two are rather different, they are both given the same species name, Meleagris gallopavo.
